ITT Corporation has announced a corporate philanthropy program, ITT Watermark, which includes an initial three-year, USD3 million commitment to help provide safe water, sanitation and hygiene education to 300 schools in the developing world – a pledge that will ultimately improve the lives of more than 100,000 children and their families. ITT, a global leader in the transport and treatment of water, will work through its strategic partner, Water For People, to improve water and sanitation conditions in schools in Latin America and Asia. ITT’s announcement was made from World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Water Utilities companies wish to optimize its water and waste treatment plants while promoting a better service to their costumers. The main challenge is to rapidly obtain flow and turbidity data, to identify critical equipment breakdowns, to detect possible intrusions and tampering and to detect the bypass – when the plant directly discharges water into the river without treatment. 
American environmental regulators are looking into the effects of low level residues of drugs in drinking water and working with healthcare professionals to see how levels might be reduced. The Environmental Protection Agency has asked the National Academy of Science to advise on potential risks to human health and draw up a list prioritising the particular pharmaceuticals for which urgent action is needed.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), International Water Association (IWA) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) today signed an agreement at World Water Week to establish an Asiawide partnership called WaterLinks that will help provide clean drinking water
and sanitation throughout the region by coordinating, promoting and aligning efforts to create Water Operators Partnerships (WOPs).
Grand IWA Awards go to both Dr. Jim Gill for mastering the implications of climate change in Australia and Professor Mark van Loosdrecht for pioneering new wastewater treatment techniques. For the first time, two individuals have been honoured with the IWA Grand Award for their contributions to the water sector.
