Turkish Irrigation Project

Royal Haskoning has been commissioned by the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSI) to develop a large irrigation area in southwest Turkey. The project covers an area of 31,000 hectares and among other things includes some main channels, pressure pipes and a large pumping station. Royal Haskoning is also looking into whether it is feasible to develop the new irrigation area further using public private partnership.

The project is part of the larger GAP project, which is focusing on doubling the amount of irrigated agricultural land in Turkey. The protocol for the irrigation project was signed on the occasion of State Secretary Frank Heemskerk’s visit to Turkey on 26 November 2008. This marked the first definite result of the memorandum of understanding entered into by Turkey and the Netherlands in May 2001.

The consultancy work that Royal Haskoning will be undertaking will take two years. Implementation of the works will follow. The total budget for implementation is likely to be in the order of € 250 million. Royal Haskoning is executing the contract under the name of NEDECO, Netherlands Engineering Consultants. One of the contract parties is the well-established contractor Yapi Merkezi, well-known for the Istanbul metro among other things, another local party is the contractor Yildizlar.

Water Management in Eastern England

The eastern part of England also is partly reclaimed from the sea, centuries ago. The marshlands now are a valuable agricultural area. Of course, maintenance is needed to keep the water where it belongs and at the same time making it work.
