Aid Agencies Warn for Water-related Disaster28/05/2008 |
| Cyclone Nargis, which hit Burma (Myanmar) three weeks ago, has left at least 100,000 people dead in the country's low-lying Irrawaddy Delta area, and aid agencies are warning of a further humanitarian crisis if emergency supplies, key among which is clean water, are not allowed in quickly enough by the ruling military junta. |

The secretive and restrictive regime has delayed representatives of aid agencies from entering the country, where widespread flooding and damage are reported. Little safe water or electricity is available and the country's rice crop is devastated. However, the junta has rejected aid from the US and other countries seen as hostile to their rule. Canada has suggested that its allies - among them, it names the US, UK and France - should force the regime to accept help. Canada has offered to send its military Disaster Assistance Response team to the area, whose engineers can rebuild water infrastructure and run water purification units that provide 50,000 litres of water a day.
